Weekly Update November 4, 2013

Hello everyone!  I hope registration is going well for all of you.

This Tuesday, November 5th, is our last general meeting for the year.  The meeting will be held at the Student Union room 340B, from 5-6 P.M.  There will be free ice cream and cheerwine at the meeting. Remember that you are required to attend at least one general meeting per semester. We will also have a raffle, the winner of which will receive a nice prize!

If you are interested in buying a UHP t-shirt, make sure to bring $10 to the meeting.  You can also bring the money to the Honors Office at any point after the meeting.  The t-shirts look really good this year, and I would recommend that everyone should get one.  Here's the design for the t-shirt:
shirt.png

This Friday Nov. 8th and Saturday Nov. 9th, there are volunteering opportunities with 2nd Harvest Food Bank.  We'll be volunteering at the Second Harvest Warehouse (500 Spratt Street, Charlotte) onFriday from 9-1 and will be helping them out with their Harvest Feast Marathon on Saturday from 12-4.  The more people who can sign up to volunteer, the better (especially on Saturday).  Here's a link to the google doc to register: https://docs.google.com/a/uncc.edu/document/d/1_YTUlqQSaFeFZPwb50pDmvyDg7dTeVHtCWDQVcXWeXI/edit?pli=1

Also this Saturday, a group of UHP students are going to volunteer at the Big Sweep.  The Big Sweep is a project where volunteers help clean trash out of local rivers and streams.  Students who are interested should sign up on orgsync by going to this link:  https://orgsync.com/login, then going to the Volunteer Outreach page and the events tab.  Everyone will be meeting in front of the Student Union at 8 A.M.

The 49er Dance Mine is being held on Nov. 15-16 in the Student Union Multipurpose Room (3rd Floor).  All proceeds will benefit the Levine Children's Hospital, and you can register to go with the UHP team as either a dancer or a supporter through the following link:  http://www.helpmakemiracles.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.team&teamID=18975.

Austin Jenkins, our President-Elect, will be hosting a watch party for the Avett Brothers concert being held at North Charleston Coliseum and sponsored by Cheerwine.  It is going to be held in Student Union 263 from 7:30-10:30 on Thursday, November 14.  Attendance is free and everyone who attends will get free Cheerwine, hors d'oeuvres, desserts (including Cheerwine cake, cookies, etc.), and much more!  All attendees will also be entered to win some fantastic door prizes.  Just come whenever you're available...you can stay the whole time or just for a minute to get some free food and drinks!  Everyone who is interested needs to RSVP on this Google Doc (even if they plan on just coming for a minute to get some free food) so that Austin will know how much stuff to bring.   https://docs.google.com/a/uncc.edu/document/d/1UX3geoDLKNpshP05W5W4ttslB6kKCqk3XcTY1dGLiXk/edit

One last note regarding our upcoming meeting.  Have you had any great accomplishments recently?  Got a good grade on a hard test, received a scholarship, or gotten a job?  Or, have you had any smaller victories, such as waking up every morning for your 8 A.M. class or washing your clothes without ending up with an odd number of socks?  If you've had any of these accomplishments or others, and want to be recognized for them, email Connie Rothwell at crothwll@uncc.edu.  We will be honoring students at the meeting tomorrow, so be sure to tell Connie about what you've done this year!

Thanks for reading the update, and here's to a great week!

Kyle

Weekly Update October 28, 2013

Greetings UHP'ers...hope everyone has had a marvelous Monday!

Thanks to everyone who attended the UHP Retreat in Black Mountain this past weekend!  With everything from campfires, canoeing, rock climbing, an Iron Chef Sushi Competition, and so many other fun activities, I think everyone had a great time.  I would just like to personally express how  grateful I am for all of the great memories and wonderful friends  I made this weekend.  I come away from the weekend more confident than ever that UHP will continue to grow and have a positive presence in our campus, local, national, and global communities for years to come!

Priority Registration begins next Monday (Nov. 4) at 9:00 a.m.  If you haven't already, make sure that you get your schedule for next semester planned out.  There are many exciting Honors courses being taught, including old favorites like World Through Film with Julie Hicks to new offerings like "Reading in Slow Motion" with Dr. Pereira, and many more!  It's not too late to schedule an advising appointment with Connie Rothwell or one of the Honors Graduate Assistants (Traci Cruey or Carrie Leigh Sutton) on Niner Advisor.  Make sure to confirm that you don't have any registration holds on your account, which can be done by looking at the "Student Records" tab on Banner.  We'd also like to remind everyone not to panic if the system is slow or freezes up when you go in to register next Monday morning.  We don't expect any technical problems, but sometimes when there are thousands of people hitting the system all at once it takes a little while for it to catch up.  If you experience difficulties, reboot and try registering several times instead of contacting someone or going into the Honors Office after the first failed attempt to register.

There's a UHP General Body Meeting coming up next Tuesday, November 5 at 5:00p.m. in Student Union 340B.  Please mark this on your calendar and plan on attending if you don't have a conflict...we're hoping for a fantastic turnout!  Remember that attendance at least one general body meeting  is required (attendance at all of them is encouraged) to maintain good standing in UHP.  We're going to make this meeting really fun and interactive, and will also be serving some yummy refreshments.  If you'd like to purchase an official 2013-2014 UHP t-shirt, please also plan on bringing $10 to this meeting.  Hope to see you there!

There are some really exciting community service events coming up.

We're also offering some opportunities to get involved with Second Harvest Food Bank and Crisis Assistance Ministry here in Charlotte.  We'll be volunteering at the Second Harvest Warehouse (500 Spratt Street, Charlotte) on Friday, Nov. 8 from 9-1 and will be helping them out with their Harvest Feast Marathon on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 12-4.  We'll be going to Crisis Assistance Ministry (also located at 500 Spartt Street in Charlotte) this Saturday (Nov. 2) from 12-2.  If you want to participate in any of these opportunities, please put your name and email in the appropriate Google Doc below:

Just a heads up, a "Cone Affair" (Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Cone Center) will be held next Thursday, November 7 and will include many exciting events, open houses, etc. throughout the building.

I'd also like to encourage any and all of you to get in touch with me or one of the other officers with any ideas you may have for possible events we could do this year.  This is YOUR program, and we want to make sure that your UHP experience is as meaningful and memorable as it can possibly be!  You can always feel free to contact us if you have any concerns, suggestions, or questions...nothing makes us happier than to hear from you!  Here's the contact information for the UHP officers:

Thanks for reading the update, and enjoy the rest of your week! :-)

Your friend,

Austin Jenkins, UHP President-Elect

Weekly Update October 14, 2013

Hi guys!
It's WEEKLY UPDATE time!

You all need to join and navigate the Orgsync website that is up and running!!!!!
I have provided some instructions below on how to use Orgsync.
The Honors Program would like to start using Orgsync as a way to log your involvement with UHP.

Go to this website and login using your 49er ID and password.

Search for the University Honors Program Student Association and request to join if you have not already done so.

We would like for everyone to upload a picture of themselves to the Orgsync website.
On the top green toolbar of Orgsync, there is a wheel-spoke-like thing on the very far right. Click on that and on the drop down menu click on "Manage Account."

Once you are on the Manage Account page, on the right side is a place for a photo. Click on "upload picture." Choose a picture that shows your face well please.

Once you have uploaded a picture, go back to the University Honors Program Student Association page. On the left hand side, there is a list of categories. If you hover over events, a drop down menu will appear with the options "events list" and "timesheets." Click on timesheets.

Find your name on the list. To the right of your name (all the way over) there will be a button with "details" typed on it. Click it.

The new page that shows is how you can log your activity within the Honors Program.
Please be sure to include a reference name. A reference name is someone that can vouch that you were in fact at that event. Officers are usually the person of reference, but could potentially be a member if they were in charge of a particular event (more often than not it should be an officer or professional staff). The reference person will be sent an email to confirm what you have said you have done. (IMPORTANT: upload a picture of yourself in case people forget names.)

So be sure to include participation that you have done thus far.
(i.e. Freshman Venture, Venture WOW, Welcome Back Picnic, Food Truck Friday, Habitat Build, 2nd General Meeting, Discussion Night, Relay Committee Meetings and any other enrichments/events you have attended) (Food Truck Friday and Venture WOW count as an enrichment.)

Orgsync is still a work in process for us all, so please bare with us. If you have questions about it or anything else PLEASE feel free to ask any one of us officers.

We have updated the calendar on Orgsync with upcoming events within the University Honors Program. So take a look and get an idea of what you would like to participate in. We will add events as they come.

The first person to tell me the title of the first post under the communication>news section will be the prize winner this week!!!

Do not forget that the Spring schedule 2014 goes live today! So make sure you are planning out your schedule. That way when registration roles around on November 4 at 9:00 AM it will be a breeze!
