Weekly Update February 24, 2014

Greetings everyone,

 

This update includes announcements and reminders concerning all things UHP.  Let myself or one of the other officers know if you have any questions. 

 

The next University Honors Program Student Assoc. meeting will be on Wednesday, March 12 (week after Spring Break) from 5-6 p.m. in Cone Center 210. 

 

Upcoming Events

• Talent Show:  The Honors College Talent Show (sponsored by the Teaching Fellows Program) will be held this Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. in After Hours (Cone Center).  All proceeds will benefit the Honors College Relay For Life team.  Bring along spare change and small bills, which you'll use to vote for your favorite acts. 
• Fashion Show:  The Honors College Annual Fashion Show will be held on Thursday, March 20 starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union Multipurpose Room (3rd Floor).  Tickets are $5, and can be purchased soon online or at the door.  All proceeds benefit the Honors College Relay For Life team.  If you want to volunteer, sign-up here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KDDL5C9 .  Contact Katey Mishler (kmishler@uncc.edu), Melissa McHugh (mmchugh3@uncc.edu), or Brad Setzer (bsetzer7@uncc.edu) with any questions. 
• Gala:  The Honors College Gala will be on March 22 starting at 8:00 p.m. at the Speedway Club.  Dress is semiformal.  Tickets go on sale TODAY for $25/person and can be purchased in the Honors College Office.  The DJ would like our list of song requests beforehand, so please send me (ajenki47@uncc.edu) a list of any songs you'd like to hear so that I can turn them over to him. 
• Relay For Life:  Starts at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4 on the track and runs throughout the night.

Community Service

• Crisis Assistance Ministry:  We'll be going this Saturday, March 1.  I have ten spots still available, so if you're free and would like to get in some service before Spring Break, please sign-up.  We'll also be going on March 15 and April 12.  Sign-up here if you haven't already:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av4x7sp1lM45dGdyRk9BakZpUHExMUtqZ3ZjdzFORHc&usp=sharing#gid=0. 
• US DOE National Science Bowl:  This is a fun opportunity to volunteer at a middle school science competition.  It's being held on UNCC's campus on Feb. 28 and March 1 (this week), and there are many time slots available, so just volunteer when you can.  Sign-up here:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/17xx-EJt3CVb6rkuhCaTNeLyq1QAnk7PXUwIKgm0ESpI/viewform.

• The list of classes for Fall 2014 will be available on Banner starting this Friday, February 28.  Check out the course offerings, and get a head start on planning your schedule before priority registration. 
• If you ordered a UHP t-shirt and haven't received it yet, they are available for pick-up in the Honors Office.

Weekly Update February 10, 2014

Hello Honors Niners!  Hope you all are having a good start to the week.

Tonight, February 10th​, is our second General Body Meeting, which will be in Cone 112 from 5-6.  The meeting is internationally themed, with speakers discussing volunteer and study abroad options and various international food.  For everyone who can make it out to the meeting, please bring a bag of fun-sized candy bars to share at the meeting.  Also, if you haven't already, bring $10 to order a "Anchor for a Cure" t-shirt at the meeting.  If you would like to see what the t-shirts look like before the meeting, there is a design picture attached to this email.

• ​We will be volunteering at the Time Warner Cable Arena with the Bobcats on February 22^nd at 4:30 pm. We need 10-15 volunteers to participate and we could raise up to $500 for our team. Remember that any money raised will be split amongst volunteers’ goals. • ​The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is holding a telecounseling event to target high ability, minority, and out-of-state students, in hopes of yielding more students from these populations. If you are interested in helping, please contact Shaniqua Marlowe at shaniqua.marlowe@uncc.edu or Zakiya Collins at zakiya.collins@uncc.edu by February 17th.  For more information, see the attached word document.

On February 18th, there will be a film screening of  Pride & Joy, A Southern Foodways Film Project, in the Student Union Theater at 2 pm.  This is a free event, and it is a great opportunity for all UHP students.  If you are interested in going, please RSVP to Clas-event@uncc.edu or call 704-687-1429.  See the attached flyer for more information

Good morning Honors Niners!

Make sure to read over the information below for important dates and announcements.

General Body Meeting

• The next general body meeting is Monday, February 10 from 5-6 in Cone 112, please bring a bag of candy to this meeting so we can have candy to deep fry at Relay For Life (fun size chocolate bars; i.e. snickers, milky way, musketeers, etc) This meeting will be internationally themed as we will be providing volunteer and study abroad information along with our other important announcements. There may even be international treats…
  • Make sure you are logging your community service events on ORGSYNC!

Honors Gala

• Make sure you mark your calendars now and save the date for the Honors Gala onMarch 22 starting at 8:00pm! This is a semiformal masquerade theme and will cost $25 a person. There will be a Shutterfly Booth, Black Jack tables, a DJ, desserts and much more. It will be at the Speedway club and is well worth the price!
