Weekly Update March 25, 2013

Good Afternoon Everyone! 

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend, we have a few updates for you! 

First off, we would like to thank everyone who attended or helped out with the many Honors events we had this weekend including the 45th Anniversary of the Honors College and the 4th annual charity fashion show, Couture for a Cure.  We really appreciate it!  

Registration

Couture for a Cure 

• We raised $720 for our Relay For Life team! 
• Thanks so much to those who volunteered for the event.  We wouldn't have been able to do it without you! And thank you to those who attended for such a great cause.  If you missed the event or would like to see the show again, here is a video with snippets from the show: http://vimeo.com/62583463

Relay For Life

• Relay is coming up on April 5th-6th.  Sign ups to volunteer for the day of will be coming your way soon!
• Relay T-shirts will be arriving sometime this week, so look out for an email to pick them up!

Black & White Affair: City Lights 

• The Black & White Affair is coming up soon!  It will be on Saturday, April 6th 7:30-11:30 in the Harris Alumni Center on campus.  Please purchase your tickets at the Honors Office if you would like to attend.  The proceeds from this event will be going to Relay For Life.

Relay for Life

April 5^th from 6pm to 6am at the Belk Track

Black and White Affair

April 6^th at 7:30 in the Harris Alumni Center

Dress up and come out for food, dancing, and lots of fun!

Tickets are being sold in the UHP office:

$5 for Relay for Life team members, $8 for non-members and will be $10 at the door

 

The Couture for a Cure Fashion Show 

This Friday, March 22^nd at 7:00 in Storrs.

Tickets will be $5 and proceeds go to Relay for Life

Promising Pages Book Drive

Sponsored by UNC Charlotte Academic Services

March 25^th-29^th, 2013 

We are collecting:

·        New and gently used books for children and adults of all ages!

·        Any type of wrapping paper and tape to wrap the books as gifts.

You can bring these items to the Honors College office in Cone

 

"Personalized Genomic Medicine"

As part of the Genomics and the Future of Medicine Series with guest speaker Hank Greely on Wednesday, March 27 from 12:30-2:00pm in the College of Health and Human Services Building room 128 for a lunch/workshop.  This event is free and open to the public.  Due to limited seating please RSVP to ethicscenter@uncc.edu by March 20, 2013.  Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis.

 

The Civility Project

On April 4^th , outside the Belk Tower, there will be dramatic readings on love, forgiveness, peace, civility and courage. Volunteers are needed to do the readings throughout the day. See the student union website for ways to sign up.

 

Registration is on Monday, March 25^th. Underclassmen, start to make appointments now with your Major Advisor so you will not have any registration holds.

Also, UHP members are encouraged to make appointments with the Honors office for advising.

I. Relay for Life:

            A. Krispy Kreme: Donut sales ($5 a box, $1 a piece)

                        1. Sold: Wed-Thurs 10:00 AM -4:00 PM

                        2. Signups available

            B. T-shirts:

                        1. Money due by 5:00 PM tomorrow in the Honor’s Office

                        2. Teal and Red available

                        3. $10.00 a shirt

II. Community Service:

            A. BHP community service: Sarah Yoder

                        1. Signup for Saturday

                        2. Smaller groups

                        3. Email: syoder3@uncc.edu

                        4. Meet: Project leader will contact you with more information

III. Registration:

            A. Questions:

                        1. When? March 25 at 9:00 A.M.

                        2. What to do if it does not work right away? BE PATIENT. Count to 10 and refresh!

                        3. Bring laptops to class and ask professors if you can step out to register if you have                                               class

                        4. HAVE BACKUPS: be prepared for full classes

                        5. Special permits needed if signing up for two or more 3700 courses (email Connie                                                 Rothwell at crothwll@uncc.edu)

                        6. New professors

                        7. Course descriptions available at honors.uncc.edu

                        8. Make sure you take honors sections when needed (sign up to meet up with advisors if                                          you are not sure)

                        1. Two-parts:

·         3790-001: write proposal

·         3791: write portfolio/present

·         Departmental honors requirements can replace these courses and you can                                                     graduate with dual honors

·         Information available under “Graduating with Honors”  section on UHP website

                        2. Keep pictures, papers, events, etc.

IV. Fashion Show:

            A. Next Friday!

            D. Tickets are $5

VI. Relay for Life:

            A. Sign up! 6:00 PM-6:00 AM, volunteer to walk, work at the booth (sign-up sheets available)

            B. Theme: Reality TV

            C. Our booth: Breakfast for Dinner (pancakes, bacon, eggs, yummm)

            D. Candy Sale:

            E. We’ve raised over $2000 so far! Keep it up you guys.

            F. Supplies: waffle irons, griddles, spatulas, extension cords, bugspray, etc.

            G. Google docs will be available for all sign-ups

            H. Prospector Takeover! – We will be asking people for spare change

            D. Historian: take pictures, slideshow at Spring Banquet and other events

            E. Nominations at next meeting (Make sure the person agrees to be nominated before you                            nominate them)
