Important Deadlines!

Hey UHP'ers!  Hope everyone is having a terrific Tuesday!

I just wanted to let everyone know that we need for people to have their money in for the Black Mountain Trip by tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 25.  Also, if you haven't yet expressed interest in the Black Mountain Trip but are now interested, don't worry...you can still come!  Any UHP'er can come into the UHP Office in Cone anytime today or tomorrow, turn-in $50, and come along for this incredible opportunity!  We will be able to take the first  30-35 students, and as of right now we've only had around 15 who have paid.  So, if you want to go you should hurry on over to the Honors Office ASAP and let them know that you want to come before it's too late!

The $50 fee (less than the cost of your average soft-cover textbook from the bookstore or Gray's) includes transportation (we'll be taking a comfy chartered bus), room & board (we'll be staying in cabins), etc.  We're very fortunate to be able to offer this low, one-time $50 fee exclusively to UHP'ers.  I can assure you this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you won't want to miss!  It is going to be worth every penny of the fee, and personally I think this opportunity would be worth 10 times that much because of all the exciting things we're going to be doing! We'll be at a wonderful facility in Black Mountain, and their trained facilitators will be leading us on some awesome activities that include things such as kayaking, hiking, an Iron Chef competition, team building, etc.

Once again, you can still have the opportunity to come along on this incredible trip....it's not too late yet!  BUT, we need you to come into the office by tomorrow at 5:00 with your $50 so we'll know how many people are committed to coming along with us!  We'll be leaving at around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, and will be back on campus by around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, so it's not a big time commitment and you'll have plenty of time to study if you have exams the following week.

Also, for any of you wonderful freshmen out there don't forget that the deadline to submit applications for the Emerging Leaders program is next Monday, Sept. 30.  Applications can be completed via the following link:  http://leadership.uncc.edu/emerging-leaders-online-application.  Also, Emerging Leaders will be holding an info session THIS WEDNESDAY IN STUDENT UNION 340DE at 6:00 p.m.  Free refreshments will be served, and you will learn lots of information about the program and can have any of your questions answered.  Even if you can't make the info session, I strongly encourage any and all freshmen to apply!

Let me know if you have any questions, and if you're available from Oct. 25 -- Oct. 27 please come along with us to Black Mountain...I hope to see lots of you coming into the Honors Office today and tomorrow!

Have a great day!

Austin Jenkins, UHP President-Elect

Weekly Update September 9, 2013

Greetings...hope everyone had a great weekend!

Thanks to everyone who attended our "Food Truck Friday" enrichment event...we had a blast!  Pictures have been uploaded to our Facebook Group.  If you haven't joined the group yet, please join ASAP to keep up with the latest events/updates:   https://www.facebook.com/groups/2201519208/.  This is an open forum and is a good place (along with our UHP blog) for members to communicate with each other regarding upcoming events and opportunities.

If you haven't done so already, please subscribe to the "Honors Niners 2013-2014" page on Moodle 2.  This can be found under the "Projects" tab and is important because it provides you with access to the UHP blog, our forums (news and social), and your personal attendance record. We also ask everyone to upload a profile picture to Moodle 2.  That way, we'll be able to recognize each other's faces and will no longer look like smiling yellow buttons with shades!

Our UHP "Wine to Water" Discussion Night is coming up on Monday, Sept. 16 from 5-7:30 in Cone 210.  We are very pleased to have Delbridge Narron joining us at this event as our guest speaker.  A free dinner will be served and it's sure to be a great time exploring a great book!  Please complete the SurveyShare (http://uncc.surveyshare.com/s/AYAMAAC) prior to this Wednesday to let us know if you'll be able to make it.

The Black Mountain Retreat has been rescheduled and will now be held October 25-27.  The non-refundable $50 deposit is now due to the UHP Office in Cone by Wednesday, Sept. 25.  This is a priceless opportunity and is highly recommended for anyone available to attend.  We'll be returning Sunday afternoon, so anyone who needs to study will have the opportunity to do so.

UHP is partnering with the Center for Leadership Development (2nd floor in the Student Union) for the 2013 Charlotte Walk to End Alzheimer's.  Registration is free and can be completed through the following link:  http://act.alz.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=3522&team_id=179849.   This community service event is being held on Sept. 28 (see link for more details) and is great fun for a great cause!

Habitat for Humanity is holding their "Mining for 49" fundraising event this Friday from 2-5 in the CHHS/COED Courtyard.  UHP will be participating in the build being held from Oct. 1-11...more details to come later!  If you are interested in getting more involved with Habitat for Humanity, contact Maggie Chahoud at mchahoud@uncc.edu.

The 49er Dance Mine (which raises money for the Levine Children's Hospital) is being held from 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 15 through 7:00 a.m. on Nov. 16.  This is the first year we've had a dance marathon at UNC Charlotte, and we ask you to join our UHP team (registration is $10) through the following link:  http://www.helpmakemiracles.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=18975.  If you're interested in helping plan this exciting event, contact Caitlin Vaverek at cvaverek@uncc.edu

We'll be sending out information regarding more community service and enrichment events soon.  Our plans include volunteering with Crisis Assistance Ministry, participating in the Color Run being held on Oct. 19, Relay for Life, etc.  Remember that all UHP members are expected to participate in enrichment and community service events each semester in order to maintain good standing.

Our next UHP General Body Meeting will be held on October 2 from 4:00-5:00 in Cone 210.  If you haven't completed the SurveyShare (http://uncc.surveyshare.com/s/AYAMAFByet, it must be completed by this Wednesday.  Congrats to Jessica Stewart, who won the drawing (prize was an iTunes gift card) that was held among students who had completed the SurveyShare by noon last Friday.

Have a fantastic week UHP!  Email me or one of the other officers with any questions, concerns, or suggestions you may have!

Weekly Update September 3, 2013

Hey everyone :)
I hope that you all have enjoyed your Labor Day weekend.
Also, I would like to thank all who came to the Welcome Back Picnic; we had a wonderful time with lots of yummy food. (The slide show will be posted on the UHP website soon- http://honorsniners.blogspot.com/)

Discussion Night is on September 16 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Cone 210.
  • If you are interested in being a table leader, keep a lookout for the surveyshare.
  • Make sure you are reading Wine to Water- this is what we will be discussing.
Relay for Life has two captains: Anna Onorato and Cassady Tetsworth
  • The actual event takes place in April of 2014.
  • Anna and Cassady need a committee to help raise funds and plan the event; so if you are interested in helping with Relay, make sure you fill out the surveyshare.
A few other community service events taking place are (make sure you fill out surveyshare too):
  • Habitat for Hunmanity Build October 1-11 (contact Maggie Chahoud if interested at mchahoud@uncc.edu)
  • Dance Marathon November 15-16 (7:00 PM TO 7:00 AM) (contact Caitlin Vaverek at cvaverek@uncc.edu)

  • Transportation and food are provided.
  • Make sure you show interest by filling out the surveyshare.

Cassady Tetsworth would love your input on the t-shirt design if you have ideas!

Kyle McGee, UHP secretary, will be creating the newsletters. There will be 3 or 4 per semester. He wants your input; if you have thoughts on freshman Venture, study abroad, UNCC football, or anything else PLEASE send it to Kyle at kmcgee4@uncc.edu

Don't forget that Food Truck Friday is coming up this Friday (September 6). I will be sending out an email tomorrow night with a more detailed plan. If you have not told me you are interested, but you are interested .. send me an email so you can be included on the email tomorrow night! (Keep in mind that this event can count as an enrichment!)

The surveyshare that is coming out soon is very important. You need to make sure you fill it out as soon as possible. The surveyshare is a chance for you to say which community service projects, social events, and other miscellaneous things you are interested in. A document should be coming along with the surveyshare to explain some of the different events going on (for clarification purposes).

UHP ... 30 years in the making ... YOU in the making!

I hope to see you all at Discussion Night ready to talk about Wine to Water!
