Weekly Update October 28, 2013

Greetings UHP'ers...hope everyone has had a marvelous Monday!

Thanks to everyone who attended the UHP Retreat in Black Mountain this past weekend!  With everything from campfires, canoeing, rock climbing, an Iron Chef Sushi Competition, and so many other fun activities, I think everyone had a great time.  I would just like to personally express how  grateful I am for all of the great memories and wonderful friends  I made this weekend.  I come away from the weekend more confident than ever that UHP will continue to grow and have a positive presence in our campus, local, national, and global communities for years to come!

Priority Registration begins next Monday (Nov. 4) at 9:00 a.m.  If you haven't already, make sure that you get your schedule for next semester planned out.  There are many exciting Honors courses being taught, including old favorites like World Through Film with Julie Hicks to new offerings like "Reading in Slow Motion" with Dr. Pereira, and many more!  It's not too late to schedule an advising appointment with Connie Rothwell or one of the Honors Graduate Assistants (Traci Cruey or Carrie Leigh Sutton) on Niner Advisor.  Make sure to confirm that you don't have any registration holds on your account, which can be done by looking at the "Student Records" tab on Banner.  We'd also like to remind everyone not to panic if the system is slow or freezes up when you go in to register next Monday morning.  We don't expect any technical problems, but sometimes when there are thousands of people hitting the system all at once it takes a little while for it to catch up.  If you experience difficulties, reboot and try registering several times instead of contacting someone or going into the Honors Office after the first failed attempt to register.

There's a UHP General Body Meeting coming up next Tuesday, November 5 at 5:00p.m. in Student Union 340B.  Please mark this on your calendar and plan on attending if you don't have a conflict...we're hoping for a fantastic turnout!  Remember that attendance at least one general body meeting  is required (attendance at all of them is encouraged) to maintain good standing in UHP.  We're going to make this meeting really fun and interactive, and will also be serving some yummy refreshments.  If you'd like to purchase an official 2013-2014 UHP t-shirt, please also plan on bringing $10 to this meeting.  Hope to see you there!

There are some really exciting community service events coming up.  The 49er Dance Mine is being held on Nov. 15-16 in the Student Union Multipurpose Room (3rd Floor).  All proceeds will benefit the Levine Children's Hospital, and you can register to go with the UHP team as either a dancer or a supporter through the following link:  http://www.helpmakemiracles.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.team&teamID=18975.

We're also offering some opportunities to get involved with Second Harvest Food Bank and Crisis Assistance Ministry here in Charlotte.  We'll be volunteering at the Second Harvest Warehouse (500 Spratt Street, Charlotte) on Friday, Nov. 8 from 9-1 and will be helping them out with their Harvest Feast Marathon on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 12-4.  We'll be going to Crisis Assistance Ministry (also located at 500 Spartt Street in Charlotte) this Saturday (Nov. 2) from 12-2.  If you want to participate in any of these opportunities, please put your name and email in the appropriate Google Doc below:

Just a heads up, a "Cone Affair" (Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Cone Center) will be held next Thursday, November 7 and will include many exciting events, open houses, etc. throughout the building.

I'd also like to encourage any and all of you to get in touch with me or one of the other officers with any ideas you may have for possible events we could do this year.  This is YOUR program, and we want to make sure that your UHP experience is as meaningful and memorable as it can possibly be!  You can always feel free to contact us if you have any concerns, suggestions, or questions...nothing makes us happier than to hear from you!  Here's the contact information for the UHP officers:

Thanks for reading the update, and enjoy the rest of your week! :-)

Your friend,

Austin Jenkins, UHP President-Elect
